Why Buyers Shouldn't Rely on a Vendor's Own References Alone
Every vendor can produce a list of happy customers. That's not evidence of quality — it's evidence that the vendor knows how to pick references.
The Selection Problem
A vendor-supplied reference list is, by definition, curated. The customers having a rough time with the product aren't on it. That doesn't make the list dishonest — it makes it incomplete, and buyers should treat it that way.
What Independent Input Adds
An outside party with no stake in the sale, brought in specifically to test the product and ask hard questions, sees things a curated reference list won't surface: how support actually performs, whether documentation matches reality, how the product holds up under real conditions rather than a guided tour.
A Simple Habit
Ask for references, absolutely — and also build in an independent check, whether that's your own team's structured trial or a third party brought in specifically to evaluate rather than to sell.
